Erratum to “Worldwide comparison of ovarian cancer survival: Histological group and stage at diagnosis (CONCORD-2)” [Gynecol. Oncol. 144 (2017) 396–4…
2017
Objective. Ovarian cancer comprises several histological groups with widely differing levels of survival. We aimed to explore international variation in survival for each group to help interpret international differences in survival from all ovarian cancers combined. We also examined differences in stage-specific survival. Methods. The CONCORD programme is the largest population-based study of global trends in cancer survival, including data from 60 countries for 695,932 women (aged 15–99 years) diagnosed with ovarian cancer during 1995–2009. We defined six histological groups: type I epithelial, type II epithelial, germ cell, sex cord-stromal, other specific non-epithelial and non-specific…
Predicting Prognosis of Breast Cancer Patients with Brain Metastases in the BMBC Registry—Comparison of Three Different GPA Prognostic Scores
2021
Several scores have been developed in order to estimate the prognosis of patients with brain metastases (BM) by objective criteria. The aim of this analysis was to validate all three published graded-prognostic-assessment (GPA)-scores in a subcohort of 882 breast cancer (BC) patients with BM in the Brain Metastases in the German Breast Cancer (BMBC) registry. The median age at diagnosis of BM was 57 years. All in all, 22.3% of patients (n = 197) had triple-negative, 33.4% (n = 295) luminal A like, 25.1% (n = 221) luminal B/HER2-enriched like and 19.2% (n = 169) HER2 positive like BC. Age ≥60 years, evidence of extracranial metastases (ECM), higher number of BM, triple-negative subtype and l…
Treatment and outcomes of patients in the Brain Metastases in Breast Cancer Network Registry
2018
Brain metastases (BMs) have a major impact on life expectancy and quality of life for many breast cancer patients. Knowledge about treatment patterns and outcomes is limited. We analysed clinical data of 1712 patients diagnosed with BMs from breast cancer between January 2000 and December 2016 at 80 institutions.Median age at diagnosis of BMs was 56 years (22-90 years). About 47.8% (n = 732) of patients had HER2-positive, 21.4% (n = 328) had triple-negative and 30.8% (n = 471) had hormone receptor (HR)-positive, HER2-negative (luminal-like) primary tumours. The proportion of patients with HER2-positive BMs decreased comparing the years 2000-2009 with 2010-2015 (51%-44%), whereas the percenta…
Infliximab in the treatment of Crohn's disease: Predictors of response in an Italian multicentric open study
2005
Abstract Background. Almost 20% of patients with active Crohn's disease are refractory to conventional therapy. Infliximab is a treatment of proven efficacy in this group of patients and it is not clear which variables predict a good response. Aims. To evaluate the role of infliximab looking at the predictors of response in a large series of patients with Crohn's disease. Patients and methods. Five hundred and seventy-three patients with luminal refractory Crohn's disease (Crohn's Disease Activity Index (CDAI) > 220–400) (312 patients) or with fistulising disease (190 patients) or both of them (71 patients) were treated with a dose of 5 mg/kg in 12 Italian referral centres. The primary endp…
Assessment and diagnosis of suspected glaucoma in patients with mucopolysaccharidosis
2015
Purpose The mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a group of rare lysosomal storage disorders, characterized by the accumulation of glycosaminoglycans within multiple organ systems including the eye. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of glaucoma in patients with MPS, as well as the characteristics, diagnosis and management of patients with MPS and glaucoma. Methods A multicentre retrospective case-note review was carried out by ophthalmologists from four tertiary referral centres to identify patients with MPS who had been treated for glaucoma. Clinical ophthalmological data were collected using standardized data collection forms. Results Fourteen patients were identified (27 eyes) of 2…
Das Langzeit-Follow-up in der deutschen pädiatrischen Onkologie als Basis für die Durchführung von Studien mit Langzeitüberlebenden
2005
BACKGROUND In recent years, the long-term survival of childhood cancer patients has increased considerably. While this is desirable, more patients with late effects are to be expected and studies thereof become increasingly important. We will need to be able to stay in touch with as many former patients as possible in order to make a systematic and comprehensive long-term follow-up possible. PATIENTS Childhood cancer patients under 15 years of age at diagnosis resident in Germany and registered at the German Childhood Cancer Registry (GCCR). METHODS The GCCR has established a 3-phase procedure for follow-up. We developed principles for the long-term follow up of these patients. They are bas…
Can we compare haemophilia carriers with clotting factor deficiency to male patients with mild haemophilia?
2020
Introduction Certain haemophilia carriers demonstrate an increased bleeding tendency, mainly related to clotting factor deficiency. No study has so far formally compared the bleeding phenotype of women and girls with mild FVIII or FIX deficiency and associated management with that of male patients affected by mild haemophilia A and B. Material and methods We retrospectively evaluated 44 women and girls with mild FVIII or FIX deficiency (FVIII or FIX 0.05-0.5 IU/mL) and 77 male patients with mild haemophilia A or B and compared them with respect to clotting factor level, age at and trigger for diagnosis, as well as treatment modalities. Results After excluding gender-related haemorrhagic sym…
Age-related socio-economic and geographic disparities in breast cancer stage at diagnosis: a population-based study.
2015
Background: This study aimed to determine the impact of socio-economic and geographic disparities on disease stage at diagnosis according to age in breast cancer (BC) patients. Secondary purpose was to describe survival . Methods: All women with primary invasive BC, diagnosed from 1998 to 2009 in the department of Cote d’Or were retrospectively selected using data from the Cote d’Or BC registry. European transnational ecological deprivation index (French European Deprivation Index) was used to measure the socio-economic environment. Relationships between socio-geographic deprivation and disease stage at diagnosis according to age were assessed by a multilevel ordered logistic regression mod…
Management and prognosis of pancreatic cancer over a 30-year period.
2009
BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to report on changes in the diagnostic assessment, patterns of care and survival over time for pancreatic cancers. METHODS: A total of 2986 cases of pancreatic cancer from the Digestive Cancer Registry of Burgundy (France) over a 30-year period (1976–2005) were considered. Non-conditional logistic regressions were carried out to identify the factors associated with resection for cure and with the use of chemotherapy. A multivariate relative survival analysis was carried out. RESULTS: Diagnostic procedures have changed. Ultrasonography and computed tomography progressively have become the major diagnostic procedures. There was a slight improvement in sta…
Empirical study of the dependence of the results of multivariable flexible survival analyses on model selection strategy
2008
Flexible survival models, which avoid assumptions about hazards proportionality (PH) or linearity of continuous covariates effects, bring the issues of model selection to a new level of complexity. Each ‘candidate covariate’ requires inter-dependent decisions regarding (i) its inclusion in the model, and representation of its effects on the log hazard as (ii) either constant over time or time-dependent (TD) and, for continuous covariates, (iii) either loglinear or non-loglinear (NL). Moreover, ‘optimal’ decisions for one covariate depend on the decisions regarding others. Thus, some efficient model-building strategy is necessary. We carried out an empirical study of the impact of the model …
